Caloric Density in Custom Diets for Lab Animals

The typical caloric density in custom diets are shown in this table showing values for commonly used diet ingredients. In most cases, these caloric density values were calculated by applying the Atwater Values (4 kcal/gm for protein and carbohydrates, and 9 kcal/gm for fat) to data (on a “dry basis”) determined by Proximate Analysis (moisture, protein, fat, fiber, ash, and carbohydrate by difference). Mineral mixture and Vitamin mixture (s) caloric density is based on the kcal/gm value of the carbohydrate “carrier”. *1 kcal/gm=4.187 J/gm and are digestible energy.
